FERGUS HUME

Fergusson Wright Hume, conocido como Fergus Hume fue un novelista inglés nacido en 1859 y que murió en 1932.
Prolífico escritor publicó cerca de ciento cuarenta novelas, la mayoría novelas de misterio ambientadas en Inglaterra pero también en otros países.
Nació en Inglaterra fue el segundo hijo de James Hume. Cuando tenía tres años, la familia emigró a Dunedin en Nueva Zelanda, allí asistió a la escuela “Otago Boy’s” y más tarde estudió derecho en la universidad de Otago.
Poco después de su graduación, en 1886 se trasladó a Melbourne donde trabajó en un bufete de abogados.

Deseoso de escribir, descubre la fama que habían adquirido las novelas de misterio en aquella época por lo que decide escribir una novela encuadrada en ese género, y de ahí surgió “El misterio del carruaje”, en un principio no encontró editor por lo que los gastos corrieron por su cuenta y logró autopublicarla; aunque alcanzó gran éxito, el escritor poco obtuvo ya que vendió sus derechos por un módico precio.
Parece ser que esta novela inspiró a Arthur Conan Doyle para escribir su famosa: “Estudio en escarlata”.
En 1888 Hume regresó a Inglaterra, donde residirá en Londres durante un par de años para trasladarse después a Essex, en concreto al distrito de Thundersley.
Poco se sabe de su vida personal y no deseaba ningún tipo de publicidad. A su regreso escribió más de cien novelas y cuentos.
Murió a Thundersley el 12 de julio de 1932, poco después de terminar su último libro: “The last straw”.
Se le considera el precursor de la novela de misterio, y ha influido en escritores, tales como, Agatha Christie, Richard Marsh o S.S. Van Dine.

    Te iba a comentar que tengo muchas ganas de leer El misterio del carruaje, pero la verdad que me he quedado sorprendida con lo prolífico del autor, qué bárbaro, ni King :)

    Sin duda un escritor de los grandes. Consiguió influenciar a escritores que hoy en día se consideran clásicos de las historias de suspense y eso ya de gran valor. Su bibliografía habla por sí misma de su capacidad creativa. Y lo que dice tu entrada, del esfuerzo de superación al haber comenzado desde cero.
